The Brookings Student Business Plan Competition is an annual contest designed to encourage innovators and entrepreneurs at South Dakota State University to organize their ideas into viable business plans. Participants will be provided with the training, mentor-ship, and experience needed to continue on to the SD Governor's Giant Vision Student Business Plan Competition. The competition is organized and hosted by a coalition of the following Brookings-based entrepreneurship ecosystem partners:
Participants must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to compete:
The competition process is:
- Brookings Economic Development Corporation
- Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship at SDSU
- Division of Research and Economic Development
- Enterprise Institute
- Small Business Development Center
- Research Park at SDSU
Participants must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to compete:
- Must be currently enrolled at SDSU as either an undergraduate or graduate student
- For teams, at least one member must be currently enrolled at SDSU
- The business must be located, or plan to be located, in the state of South Dakota
- Each individual or team member must participate in the provided training sessions
- Submission to the SD Governor's Giant Vision Student Business Plan Competition is required in order to receive award money
The competition process is:
- Registration of business plan or idea
- Submit the form at the bottom of this page or download the printable registration form below
- Business plan training
- 2 sessions will be provided to walk through how to create a business plan
- Financial plan training
- Individual 1-hour sessions will be provided to walk through how to create a financial plan
- Mentor pairing
- Each participant/team will be paired up with an industry mentor who can meet with participants and offer guidance
- Business plan submission
- Each participant/team will submit their completed business plan by the deadline
- Judging and selection of finalists
- Business plans will be reviewed by a panel of judges and finalists selected
- Final pitches and judging
- Finalists will give in-person presentations to pitch plans, 10 minutes in length, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A
- Final judging will be based upon quality of business plan, impact of presentation, and overall assessment of potential/feasibility
- Announcement of winners
- $7,000 in prize money will be awarded
- Award money will be given after submission to the SD Governor's Giant Vision Student Business Plan Competition is confirmed
